The purpose of this module is to equip students with the applied competence to demonstrate an ability to use a range of specialised skills to identify, analyse and address complex or abstract problems drawing systematically on a body of knowledge and methods appropriate to a field, discipline or practice. The rationale for this module is that it is envisaged as a generic module in advanced research methodology to prepare students who embark on studies at this level in the faculty of Management Sciences with the necessary knowledge, skills and competence that will develop the graduate attributes identified by the Tshwane University of Technology to answer to the institution’s mission to “conduct relevant research and promote innovation, engagement and social enterprise”. The module further contributes to the purpose of the qualification in that it prepares students to embark on studies at the Master’s and Doctoral levels and the increasing complexity of learning and assessment practices across the programme and into further studies. In addition, the module will develop students to solve complex problems in the world of work, irrespective of whether they embark on further studies. Finally, the module addresses sufficient ethical research issues to develop personal and professional ethics in our students.

Advanced Labour Relations V

Harmonious labour relationships are critically important in all organisations and are viewed as a primary responsibility of all members of an organisation. Human resource and labour relations specialists should, however, be highly effective in guiding and supporting managers and employees on workplace labour relations matters and should consequently be appropriately skilled and knowledgeable on relatively complex labour relations management strategies, policies, procedures and practices within the context of current developments in the South African labour market and revised South African labour laws. This module will therefore equip students with relatively complex knowledge and skills required for the effective implementation of pro-active labour relations systems, strategies, policies, procedures and practices in South African organisations within the context of South African labour laws and influences from various internal and external variables in the South African labour relations environment.

Advanced Labour Law V

Compliance with labour laws is critically important in all organisations and is therefore viewed as a primary responsibility of all members of an organisation. Human resource and labour relations specialists should be informed and able to comply with and implement labour laws that affect all aspects of workplace labour relations strategies, policies, procedures and practices. This module will therefore equip students with relatively complex knowledge and skills required for effective implementation or compliance with South African labour laws. The module builds on the advanced labour relations offerings in the (Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management) qualification. The focus of learning outcomes of the respective modules is, however, different in depth and breadth. This deliberate overlap ensures that there are cross-links between these modules which will ensure that students develop an integrated understanding of the broad nature of people management in South African organisations.

We will equip students with fairly complex knowledge and skills related to the correct implementation of fairly complex labour law provisions and principles in a variety of labour relations management strategies, policies, procedures and practices that are common components of workplace labour relations management systems. It will thus add depth and breadth to the existing knowledge and skills of students that are related to organisational-level labour relations management systems. Related skills and knowledge are specifically aimed at knowledge and skills that are required to effectively comply with, or implement South African labour laws.

Knowledge and skills related to labour law are prerequisites for effective functioning in any organisational environment, irrespective of organisational type or position. This module equips students with essential work-related knowledge and skills in this regard. The importance of fair, justifiable and ethical conduct in labour relations is emphasized and illustrated during learning activities and the negative outcomes of unlawful, unfair and unethical labour relations conduct are emphasised and contextualised.
