    Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management

    The Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management is a professionally oriented qualification for individuals who want to advance their careers in project leadership and develop the expertise to manage complex projects and programmes in modern organisations. It is ideal for current and aspiring project professionals seeking deeper strategic, technical and research-based capability in a field that continues to grow in importance across industries. It prepares learners to manage projects within a broader organisational and portfolio context. Students develop advanced knowledge of project, programme and portfolio management, along with the ability to contribute to strategic organisational decision-making through the informed use of project management tools, techniques and methodologies. The programme equips graduates to manage the full project lifecycle, from initiation and planning through to execution, monitoring, control and closure, while addressing projects of varying complexity within different professional environments. A key strength of the programme is its combination of practical relevance and academic depth. Learners build competence in areas such as stakeholder management, leadership, communication, negotiation, conflict management, project quality, procurement and project risk, including the use of both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The programme also explores agile project management, distributed and virtual teams, cross-cultural communication, large international projects and the alignment of projects with business goals. The research component supports evidence-based practice and provides a foundation for further postgraduate study.

    To apply for this qualification, a student requires:
    • An Advanced Diploma in Project Management, or other relevant qualification at NQF Level 7.

    Fees are paid per module. The programme will be completed over two years.  Compulsory modules - 120 credits

    Agile Approaches to Project Management

    Module Fees: R5,210
    Credit: 12
    This module equips learners with comprehensive agile project management knowledge, skills, tools and techniques. This module covers agile approaches, processes, and roles in project management. The module also covers when to use agile, the advantages and disadvantages, and the challenges of the agile approach when compared with traditional methods.

    Business and Commercial Aspects of Projects

    Module Fees: R6,250
    Credit: 15
    We will enable learners to become adept at concepts, approaches, tools and models for innovation, strategic alignment, obtaining funding, finance and cost management, and return on investment (ROI) (i.e., making money from projects). This module also empowers the learner with the knowledge to make decisions based on analysis to kill a project when it is not profitable, or no longer relevant to the company strategy.

    Behavioural Aspects for Project Managers

    The purpose of this module is to equip learners with tools and techniques to manage resources (equipment, manpower, machines, money, time, and space), including the legal aspects of project management and communication in projects. The module will enable learners to develop an advanced understanding of concepts, approaches, and tools for planning, acquiring, developing, and managing the resources required to complete a project activity. Because projects involve people, there is always complexity and uncertainty that cannot be completely controlled; the elements of the project resource module will also include managing stakeholders and communication.

    Legal Aspects in Project Management

    Module Fees: R5,210
    Credit: 12
    This module focuses on contracts and procurement of resources for use in the project environment. The purpose is to equip the learner with the requisite knowledge of the legal aspects of project management and the procurement of resources throughout the project life cycle. Further, the objective is to expose the learner to the basic principles of law with which the project manager must deal throughout the project life cycle. The content deals with the process of creating, performing and completing a contract that is mutually beneficial to all parties. In addition, learners will be introduced to project management and contract law, as well as aspects of labour law relevant to the project manager. Learners will be encouraged to implement the taught methodology in their workplaces through theoretical and practical assignments. Upon completion of this module, learners will be expected to perform procurement planning, solicitation planning, solicitation, source selection, contract management, and contract closeout.

    Project Management Information Systems and Management

    Module Fees: R5,210

    The purpose of this module is to equip learners with the requisite knowledge on project management information systems and management and its applicability and use in the project environment. The learner will be equipped with the knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to leverage various information management tools in depth. The learner will gain competencies on how IT systems can help with managing various aspects of project documentation and communications.

    Portfolio and Programme Management Principles

    Here we address the fundamental principles of managing portfolios and programs. The module prepares students to successfully maximise resources, minimise risks, and support the organisation’s strategic objectives, and, ultimately, bottom line. The module further equips students with the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to effectively monitor and manage an organisation’s interrelated portfolios, programs, and projects. Students are expected to develop competencies needed to approach program and portfolio management from a strategic mind-set, incorporating research-based insights to align with business objectives and achieve results.

    Advanced Research Methodology A

    Module Fees: R6,250
    Credit: 15
    The purpose of this module is to equip learners with research capabilities and knowledge to undertake scientific inquiry and respond effectively to complex problems in a fast-paced decision-making environment. Learners will develop competence in formulating research proposals, conducting literature reviews, selecting appropriate qualitative and quantitative research designs, and applying suitable research methods and instruments. The module also emphasises research ethics and the importance of aligning methodological choices with the problem statement and the intended study's purpose.

    Advanced Research Methodology B

    Credit: 15
    This module develops learners’ research knowledge and applied skills to support scientific investigation, problem-solving and evidence-based decision-making. Emphasis is placed on building competence in key stages of the research process, including proposal development, literature surveying, research design, data collection methods and ethical practice. The module provides a foundation for selecting and applying appropriate research approaches aligned with the aims, scope, and ethical requirements of the intended study.

    Strategic Project Management

    Module Fees: R5,000
    Credit: 12
    Here, we equip learners with the requisite knowledge of strategic project management in multi-project environments. This module equips the learner to align projects with the business strategy. The module teaches students the importance of aligning projects with the business strategy. Strategic alignment is a two‐way process. Overall business strategy guides project planning, and, in turn, project success drives enterprise strategy. Students understand the bigger‐picture goals of PM, how to accomplish strategic goals, how to identify what is being accomplished and why, and how to achieve goals. Other topics include measuring project success, portfolio, and program management.
